Modesty is a funny thing. Everyone seems to have their own idea of what modesty is, and at some point it really is a personal thing. There really are no "official rules" about what to wear and what not to wear. Let's see what the Word says about our appearance.
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
This is one of my favorites. Our bodies? They're like walking billboards for Jesus. Everything we wear should shout to the world that we are daughters of the King.
Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. (1 Peter 3:3-4)
Yikes. This one is a toughie. (And very debatable!) There are so many ways to take this one. Some people take it literally - and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Personally, I love clothes. I love wearing pretty jewelry and doing my hair nicely. But you can go overboard and start to be overly concerned with those things. I think what Peter is trying to teach here is balance: be most concerned with the things of God. After all, only we look at what is on the outside - God looks at the inside! (1 Samuel 16:7)
Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. (1 Timothy 2:9-10)
Again we see this same theme. Our eyes shouldn't be focused on the temporary things - fashion and the like. There is nothing wrong with making ourselves look presentable. (Esther ring a bell?) But there is a lot wrong with becoming vain and constantly worrying about how we look.
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. (Romans 12:1)
Last one. This applies to us girls, too. Once again we see that our bodies don't belong to us. That idea of "it's my body, and I'll wear what I want" is not from the Lord! He made us, don't you think He has a say in what we adorn ourselves with?
Let's make sure that everything we wear is God-approved.
If it doesn't pass the test, throw it away. (Don't give it away - if it isn't modest nobody should wear it anyway!) Put everything you think about buying to the test, too. Oh, and by the way - sometimes even the "fingertip rule" is too short!
You are not going to get the same attention that a girl who dresses immodestly would get. Guess what? That's a good thing. Any guy who wouldn't like you just because you don't show enough skin isn't worth it anyway. Your Mr. Right will love you BECAUSE you are modest. It shows an inner beauty that will last a lifetime.
Don't misunderstand me - being modest doesn't mean you can't be fashionable. It just means that you dress with class and elegance. Basically - what would Kate Middleton wear? If it's ideas you're looking for, you can check out my Pinterest board. (Total shameless plug there!)
I know this post was super long. If you stuck with me, thank you!
Be blessed, precious sister.
